Thanks to my Peers: How to Support Others and its Importance by Shannon - May 2015 Scholarship Essay

One skill I have learned from my peers is to support each other in his or her goals and endeavors. While in high school, I was in the Chorus and Drama program. During auditions and rehearsals for performances, my peers were supportive of each other, which allowed everyone including myself to perform to the best of our abilities.

For example, when I would go up and perform my progress on rehearsals for a solo, my peers would clap for me and cheer me on. They wanted me to succeed and improve to the best of my ability. I then learned from my peers the importance of showing support for one another in a vocal and physical matter. That is, I more so grasped that a student does not always know if he or she has support from their peers, but with an obvious showing of this support through clapping, positive comments and cheering does make it clear that the support is there. This was what occurred for me from my peers – and I learned to show this support in these obvious and friendly manners to my peers as well.

Through watching my peers’ support they gave, I also learned how important this support truly was – without this support it makes achieving goals much more difficult. For instance, when trying to go out into the world to become a singer or actor, there are competition and other people who will knock you down. However, this support from my peers will stay with me and remind me of the truth as opposed to lies that are aimed to make me want to give up. Instead, I will remember what positive and constructive things to work on, and never give up. This outlook is true for me and my peers, as I too gave them the support. In essence, the skill I learned from my peers, how to support others, made it much easier to support them too, as I knew the way to do it and its importance.
