The life by Shannon - March 2020 Scholarship Essay

If I could ask anyone in my family how they see my career plan in the next ten years it’d be simple. Most would answer finish college, go to graduate school, find a husband and settle down. Well, although that sounds appealing to me it’s just not me. Hi, i’m Shannon Linn. Current second semester freshman at SUNY Cortland College in New York. Yes, I would love my life to be that simple but I mean if it was would I be typing this essay on my bed after being evacuated from my campus because of the coronavirus... no I wouldn’t. I think my ten year career plan is a little different than what my family thinks it is.I would and do intend to graduate my university in the Spring of 2023 with a degree in inclusive childhood education with a concentration in English. After my graduation I would like to attend a graduate school to get my masters in teaching. In the beginning years of my teaching career I would like to work in poor area school districts. I would like to do this because I would like to teach those students the most. While I was there teaching I would like to build an inclusive classroom. Making everyone feel at home, loved, and making that classroom feel like a home away from home. I would like to have the students feel as though they could express themselves without the fear of getting judged. One of my goals of my teaching career is to help make a change in the education and achievement gap. Yes, some of that gap is due to financial issues, but some of it could also be changed by the help of the teachers building a stronger support system for their students. One of the biggest advantages for me when I was struggling in school as a kid was knowing my teacher had my back and wanted to see me succeed. Everyone deserves this love in schools and that’s my plan as a teacher to help make that happen. I mean in the next couple years it wouldn’t hurt if I fell in love with a fellow teacher and have a hallmark type of love story, but that might just be a daydream. Eventually, I would like to settle down but my teaching career will always be number one in my book. I believe that no student should be treated differently based on their race, financial status, gender etc. students come to school to learn and that’s why they should all be treated equally and to be taught to succeed. My family had me cut out as the cookie cutter girl who just wants to be a stay at home mom eventually, but i’m a little different in my eyes. I want to help change the education system for future generations of children.
