by Shania - April 2020 Scholarship Essay

The time was 9:15 p.m. and my coach yelled “Let’s play a game!” My cheer team sarcastically replied with a stale ̈Yay.” My group was ready to finish with no mistakes, stumbles or falls. The team was dripping in sweat and exhausted from rehearsing the routine multiple times. Then faster than anyone could comprehend, in the middle of what would have otherwise been a perfect stunt, my flyer’s foot slipped and she began to fall out of the stunt, head first with her neck and wrist an inch away from the ground. I broke her fall which prevented her from seriously hurting herself. That was the moment I knew I wanted to enter the medical field.
Although becoming a registered nurse is my personal goal, my family’s strong will and beliefs have been instrumental in this decision. For example, I have witnessed my grandmother fight to live a happy, productive life despite her numerous health battles such as, post stroke complications, diabetes, and recently being diagnosed with breast cancer. In addition, seeing my mother care for my grandmother, my sister and I each day with grace, compassion and patience has impacted my desire to help those who suffer from illness.
Emphasizing on the caring aspect of nursing is essential to me. During my visits to the hospital to see my grandmother and other loved ones, I noticed that nursing has become more science based and less care and compassion oriented. While science is an important part of nursing, care and compassion are just as vital. Addressing one’s psychological and emotional needs can facilitate their road to being well physically.
To sum up, being a student of your accomplished university in conjunction with my determination will be the impetus to complete this journey. I am certain that given the opportunity, I will excel academically and continue the legacy of my grandmother and mother. Thank you for allowing me to express my enthusiasm and gratitude to start this next chapter of my life.
