Better Student in the New Year by Shalia - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

Year after year, I’ve created New Year’s resolutions that not only fail, but seem to make life more difficult. However, this year I’ve constructed a resolution that will make my life as a student much simpler. After being in high school for three and a half years, I’ve come to the conclusion that being unorganized is one of the worst things a student can be. Classwork, homework, and syllabi become one as they descend into the abyss that is our backpacks. By becoming more organized, my grades will increase and I’ll be less likely to procrastinate.
I have been scolded many times by my teachers as I tend to deliver the same excuse, “I’m sorry but I can’t find it,” in regards to my assignment. After sifting through piles of work, trash, and other mystery items, I usually find what I am looking for. Unfortunately, it’ll be way past the due date thus, making me miss out on essential grade points. By becoming organized, I’ll be able to boost my grades and grade point average.
Along with disorganization comes procrastination. By not being organized a chain of failure follows. Knowing that there’s more work on top of the work one already has can be certainly discouraging. That can cause people to push off an assignment even longer. By saying, “Oh, I can do it later,” can become hazardous because later always turns into never. Having a neat, tidy area can create a sense of motivation therefore pushing one to strive harder.
Organization is the best tool for students. It’s much easier to soar through life and school by being organized. I’ve chosen to become more organized as my New Year’s resolution with hope to reach my full potential as a high school student.
