Leadership; an Essential to College Success by Seth - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Leadership is defined as an act or instance of leading, guidance, or direction*, but how does this apply to our success in post-secondary education. To defend the claim that leadership is essential to college success we must first define what college success truly is, what true leadership entails, and how they are intertwined.

What is college success? Some may say that college success is achieving straight A's and getting that 4.0 GPA. Others will say that college success is defined by the amount you learned and the experience you have both in and out of the classroom. These "others" would be correct. True college success is not measured by a GPA but is defined by the education you have received. You say, "What does college success have to do with leadership?" To answer this question, we must first determine what true leadership is.

True leadership is not just a quality that someone is born with but a mentality and set of skills that can be acquired overtime. Leadership is not bossing around, creating rules, or running the show. Leadership is the ability to crate unity and inspire teamwork. It is a mentality the breeds creativity within a group that births greater outcomes than could have ever been produced.

Now back to the question at hand, "What does college success have to do with leadership?" Leadership is the basis of success and when implemented into education you can create an environment that would otherwise not be created. As a leader you can take initiative to create a study group which in turn would create a greater chance of success for the entire class. As a leader you can control the attitude of the classroom and create a better learning element.

As you see leadership is an essential to the success of not only you personally, but you can create success for the multitudes. If we acquire the skills it takes to be a leader in and out of the classroom the after-effects are endless.
