An End to Violence by Serene - August 2015 Scholarship Essay

Tears are rapidly drizzling down the damp cheeks of a young boy as his father is sent off to war. The father reluctantly lets go of his son’s hand and made a heartfelt departure, not knowing whether he will be able to see his family again.

Wars between nations, ethnic groups, religions, and even families stir turmoil, unhappiness, and potentially the greatest loss of loved ones. To eliminate conflicts and disasters in everyday life is inevitable; however, educating the youth to advocate peace over violence can immensely decrease the amount of violence and bloodshed that occurs in today’s world.

A course, The Power of Peaceful Ideas, could be a valuable addition to a high school curriculum. During their teenage years, high school students are yet discovering themselves and exploring their identities. To encourage non-violence and friendship can be a valuable asset to these growing individuals. Helping them approach the real world with peace over violence will not only aid them with positive strength during troublesome encounters, but will also equip them with moral virtues.

Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Junior are only 2 examples of the multitudes of inspiring people who have encouraged harmony and happiness over despair and hopelessness. A course educating high school students on the importance of fellowship and unity through peace can produce even greater leaders for humanity in the near future.
