Advice for Incoming High School Freshman by Seneca - November 2014 Scholarship Essay

One piece of advice that I would give to an incoming high school freshman would be that you should not worry about what other people think about you. You do not need to impress anyone and you most certainly do not need to try and change yourself for that person. There will be people in your life who try and make you do things that you normally would not do and maybe are not comfortable with. Do not let someone change you. If that person does not like that you do not do something that they do, or act how they act, chances are you probably should not be hanging around with them.

If someone will only be your friend if you act a certain way they are not a good friend. Just because you dress differently than others does not make you any better or not as good as them. You will change your style so much that you will not even know who you are and what you are comfortable with wearing. A person will only talk to you because of how you dress, they are not a true friend. True friends will not judge you.

You need to remember that what you say can hurt someone. Be careful what you say to people. Do not judge them because they are different than you. No two people are exactly alike. You are no better than the next person. If you see someone making fun of another person, stand up for them. Do not let anyone belittle others. You can make a difference in someone's life, never forget that.

After high school, none of the things that you thought were important will matter. How many parties you went to or who you dated will not matter. Your popularity will end. It will not matter how many friends you had because you will not leave high school with the same friends that you came with. Not everyone will stick around for your entire life. You learn who your true friends are and you learn to be a true friend. Always be yourself even if others do not like it. Stay focused on school and do not worry about the little things.
