All-District Band Improvement by Sebastian - February 2017 Scholarship Essay

When I was freshmen in high school I was last chair in the all-district of the Alto Sax. It made me feel ashamed that I couldn’t do better. It made my band director and my fellow alto sections disappointed because they knew I could have done better but I didn’t. After that I devoted myself to improve on the all-district music and go up into a higher chair.
So I practice and when I needed help I went to my band director if he would help in some of the rhythms, because some of the rhythms were complicated. So I listen to the music on YouTube so I can hear what it needs to sound like. I was getting so frustrated because even with the help I couldn’t play the parts of the district music. Some of the measures stump me every time I get to it. It started to make me think that I can’t play it because I can’t do it, but I didn’t want to disappoint my section and the directors again. So I practice and even started to play the parts slow so that when I get to it I can play it straight through correctly, even the director said that I have improve a lot over the year.
Therefore, the time when I went to all-district I played my best and after that I waited for the results and I was amazed that I’m not last chair. I improve dramatically and it made my band directors impress and also my fellow section. I was happy because I didn’t disappoint my section or the directors, because they helped me improve on my music skills and practicing a lot paid off for the All-District Band.
