Personal Development of College Students by sean - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
It is often asked as to whether or not traits that are desired in a good leader are required to complete a college education. This is a loaded question, because what does one want in a leader? Are you looking for meticulous attention to detail, sheer intelligence, or a willingness to see their peers succeed? These are all traits that are present in a successful leader. However, the majority of college students will not learn these valuable skills and traits until much later in their lives, if they ever learn them at all.
The majority of college students enter their freshman year leaving home for the first time. During this first year away from the watchful eye of mom and dad, most engage in morally questionable acts while exercising their newly found freedoms. We can only hope that the future leaders of America outgrow this wild “party” stage that most go through as they grow up, mature, and become productive members of society.
As we sit back and watch our youths grow up and become their own people we begin to see better decision making in the majority of our youngsters. However, there are those who continue to make questionable decisions for the remainder of their lives. Maturity is not a quality that is distributed equally amongst humanity, nor is it something that is guaranteed to progress at a given rate or at a given time in one’s life.
There are many admirable traits and that come as a result of one’s time and experience in college. There are many fine leaders that have great success in their post high school educational endeavors; however, there are many people who have great success in college, but remain terrible leaders and have few to no admirable leadership qualities. Still, there are those who struggle in their college pursuits who make far better and admirable leaders than those who had no issues.
Leadership is not something that can be taught, but rather is a trait that people grow into and develop through their life experiences and decisions that they make. You will only get as much out of your college experience as you are willing to put into it, and admirable leadership traits are not required to be successful in your endeavors. However, outside of the college environment leadership potential is a hot commodity in the work force and if you are able to develop those skills while still in school you will be miles ahead of your competition upon finishing your education.
