Why College Is Important by Scott - April 2020 Scholarship Essay

College is expensive and time consuming, but there are a few reasons I believe college to be important. First of all, it furthers your education, preparing you for a career. Secondly, it provides a unique stage of transition from dependence to independence. It also lets you meet new people.

While in college, you have the opportunity to study in various fields and discover what it is you wish to pursue. This provides a well rounded education that not only prepares you for a job in your major, but really any career you want. Many employers look for a college degree as part of the hiring process. It demonstrates you have the capability to learn and the dedication to be successful.

When you graduate high school, you are suddenly an adult. Many people are not ready to jump straight into the world of adulthood. College gives you the time to prepare, as well as some experience being independent. For most, it is their first chance to see what life is like without a parent fall back on. You are on your own, with responsibilities such as feeding yourself and making sure you are on time to class. These are relatively minor responsibilities, but they prepare you to tackle the larger ones later on. Additionally, there are people to fall back on if you find yourself struggling, when without college you would be stranded on your own.

Humans are social creatures, and healthy relationships are key to our health. The people we meet in college seem to be the ones who become our life-long friends. These people can introduce us to new cultures and teach us things you would never learn inside a classroom. Most importantly, they will become the foundation of our social lives.

So, even though it is expensive and time consuming, I think college is worth it. The people, the life experience, and education are large factors in being successful in life. Overall, the importance of college is to prepare us for what comes next.
