Help Me, Help You by Savannah - January 2015 Scholarship Essay
As a college student majoring in Communications, I have had many teachers, some good and some not so good. Students classify teachers into two different categories,in school, its the good teacher who truly loves kids, however their class is challenging, but they are willing to help you. Or there is the not so great teacher who seems to have decided to be a teacher just because they are really smart and know all of the ins and outs of their desired course. These teachers are the teachers that potentially make students hate school and learning.
Something that people realize about small children is that they pick up on your attitude and passion. This is the same for students. The first day a student walks into a classroom sets the mood for what the entire semester is going to be like. You can tell if the instructor is upbeat and excited about the semester that you might actually enjoy the class. If the teacher simply hands out the the syllabus and starts to review what the qualifications are, chances are its not going to be your favorite class. As many of us know, lecturing is the most common way to teach a class, yet we also know that it is the same way that looses the kids attention most. Making the subject come to life is what really makes for a good teacher. Sometimes this can be hard to do, especially if the subject is math. However, the teacher that grabs the heart of a student and truly makes a connection with them is the teacher that usually ends up making such a great influence in their life.
As a student, I do not consider all the small details in the courses important to me, what I find most important is what I come home talking about, when I'm not being forced to. The sole job of a teacher should not be just to teach, I personally like when I come out of a class feeling as if i have discovered something about myself while being in the class. Maybe something I found an interest in. These types of situations happen when a teacher acts like they actually care about the students. While different varieties of teaching is a must for learning, the most important thing that teachers should know from students is that we look to you for guidance and answers, and when you make yourself available thats when the doorway to learning opens up in us. Everyone wants to know that someone is there for them, and going through college is hard. However, in the past semester I had three teachers go out of their way to help me. I had never experienced this before in college until recently. I found myself way more interested in art history, french, and the reconstruction of the Unites States after the Professors reached out to me. Even though none of the classes relate to my major they captured my attention and I finished really well in all of the classes.
Teachers, my piece of advice to you is this, you have the talent, you obviously like kids and school, so get to know them, they will change your life and make and impact on you, just as you do the same to them.
