Making Life Worthwhile by Savannah - April 2014 Scholarship Essay

A book I read recently, Kisses from Katie, has impacted me greatly. In her autobiography, Katie Davis, tells how at just 18 years old, upon her high school graduation, she made a decision to move to Africa where she focused on building a program centered on giving orphaned children a home and providing a way for them to go to school and receive an education. Katie Davis is an individual who has stood out to me as an amazing and inspiring woman. Within 3 years of living in Africa, this former homecoming queen, had legally adopted 13 children giving them homes and saving them from disease and poverty.

As a young girl, Katie has inspired me in countless ways. For starters, she expresses independence and self strength. She disregarded any fear she may have had when deciding to follow her heart and turned a cheek to negative input from others. Katie has shown selfless qualities in helping others and making multiple sacrifices to assist those in need. These are traits I attempt to impersonate every day in every situation. Katie is an individual who shows courage, integrity, and genuine compassion for others. After reading her book, I can earnestly say her thoughts and words have forever changed me. Since finishing Kisses from Katie, I have sincerely found myself striving to help others at all cost, and working to see things from a different perspective. Katie has inspired me greatly and has been the motive behind many of my most recent decisions to be a positive change in my community.
