Education: A catalyst for success by Sarah - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

It is estimated that half of the homeless population have not completed high school. There are also many welfare recipients that have limited educational backgrounds. A strong correlation exists between completing a college education and future economic success. What this means is that the likelihood of an individual with a completed education degree of becoming homeless or on welfare is low. This also means that having an education provides some safeguards against poverty. Aside from this, an education can help a person to get financially ahead in life. It can provide the skills and motivation to continue to reach for bigger and better things. The organizational skills and perseverance required to complete an education degree are characteristics that financially secure individuals possess. Education is a catalyst for success in achieving financial freedom if used appropriately.

Basic skills such as reading, writing, and being able to articulate yourself can bring you a long way as far as securing employment and retaining it. Earning a degree gives a person a sense of accomplishment and the confidence to obtain and retain employment. Without an education, employment can be obtained but it is often in a manual labor job that requires physical exertion. Many employers prefer employees with a degree, as that is an indication of self-discipline, motivation, and perseverance despite setbacks or obstacles. It is also an indication of a respect for authority, as the individuals must abide by strict graduation requirements.

Furthermore, certain fields of work require degrees and certification/licensure in order to enter. Examples of these are medical personnel, mental health personnel, and educators. None of these can perform their job functions without a degree. There are also apprenticeships and specialty programs that provide certifications for certain trades like plumbers, electricians, and massage therapists. All of these individuals complete an education with the tools for success, but ultimately it is an individual’s determination to work that makes the biggest difference.
