People Without Leadership Skills Go By Unnoticed, But Not Unskilled by Sarah - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Leaders are important in most situations, but are leadership skills needed to succeed in college? Most people can be classified as a leader or a follower, but does being of either personality really determine someone’s ability to survive in an academic environment? It’s deemed important to be able to speak in front of a crowd, to be able to get people to listen to you, and to have the ability to present what you think should be done in a certain situation, but is that really the key to success for every person? Lots of people in the world will never have to display leadership skills in any situation, which could be for numerous reasons. They could be too shy or maybe even just not want to. It wouldn’t be fair for some people to not be able to succeed because they aren’t the type of person that is seen as the most important. Leadership skills are important for being a true leader, but not needed for college success.

It’s empowering to speak in front of a crowd and have them listen, and it’s an amazing to have the ability to help the world by leading others in important acts. People with these leadership qualities get to inspire so many people on a daily basis. They know how to fight for what they think is right, and lead others in helping with the cause as well. A system without a leader could never survive, whether it be bees without their queen bee and therefore nothing to work or live for, or a class without a teacher, nowhere to turn for help.

Though it’s known that a leader is an important role everywhere, the silent, less known role of a follower needs to be taken under consideration sometimes too. Everyone knows that leaders are needed in order to come up with what needs to be done and to tell the others in the group how the plan is going to work, but nothing could ever be done without the people of the group. They work just as hard sometimes, and silently, without recognition. If everyone was a leader, then nobody would listen to anybody. People would just argue, and nothing would get done. People without leadership skills still have the skills to survive in situations just as people with leadership skills do.

College is a place where students not only learn how to survive on their own, but strive to find the best versions of themselves. Some people may not have leadership qualities, but they have other skillsets they’ve gathered over the years. All students can use the skills they’ve developed that aren’t leadership related to do work in college, and with enough motivation, they can gain the skills they need in order to survive. College success is not based off of a student’s ability to lead, but their attitude and how set they are on reaching their dreams.
