The Dream Classroom by Sarah - July 2020 Scholarship Essay

A dream classroom would certainly need to benefit the three types of learners; auditory, visual, and kinaesthetic while making everyone feel accepted and safe. Visually, the classroom would have white walls so bright posters could be hung. Not only will colorful posters help make the classroom more pleasing to the eye, but posters can also provide educational information to help a visual learner. Like many classrooms today, the front wall would house a large whiteboard so, while talking through the lesson, a teacher would be able to draw and write out important takeaways, benefiting both auditory and visual learners. Kinaesthetic learners need movement, so having multiple seating areas would be ideal. For example, in front of the teacher’s desk, there would be regular desks and chairs. Perhaps there could also be a carpet for seating, a couch, medicine balls, and/or beanbags. Some seating would also be useful with an area for computers to benefit visual and auditory learners who benefit from graphics and videos. With posters, a large whiteboard, seating options, and a computer station, all types of learners would be satisfied.
As a visual and kinaesthetic learner, I find it hard to learn in my high school. The walls are often dull and the chairs are as hard as a rock. My attitude towards school is often changed by the visuals. Dull classrooms make school feel like a prison. On the contrary, classrooms with bright colors, essential oils being diffused (incense), and music playing during working periods make me feel welcome and happy while learning.
I strongly believe that students, especially in today’s world where there are school shootings almost every year, need to feel welcome and safe. Once all types of learners have a bright environment, I believe that students’ attitudes will change, simply based on being in the dream classroom.
