The Importance of Attending College by Sarah - April 2020 Scholarship Essay

One of the most intimidating but exhilarating new chapters of life is going to college. Whether it is going 1,000 miles away to live in an unfamiliar city as an incoming student, or commuting to school whilst living at home, college is a new adventure. Although the stereotype that you “must” go to college in order to land a “great” and “successful” job is just a rumor, college is essential for more than just a foundational education.
Besides providing the education required for the career you choose to pursue; college unlocks infinite opportunities. Through what seems like endless assignments and challenging coursework, you inherit the valuable skill of perseverance that will benefit you for the rest of your life. As said by Celestine Chua, “Everyone faces challenges in life. It’s a matter of how you learn to overcome them and use them to your advantage” proves that dedication to battle through challenges produces fruit. College gives young adults the taste of what it is actually like to live on their own with responsibilities. Instead of the normality of having someone looking over you to keep you on track of what you are supposed to be doing, it now becomes your duty. Taking on the task of balancing rigorous schoolwork, everyday chores, a social life, and your own personal care is just another step in growing into a disciplined adult.
College not only allows a student to acquire a new skill set but gives you the opportunities to look within. New doors are constantly being opened which causes you to stumble upon what you are truly passionate about. From there, the specific educational path you choose will allow you to thrive while learning about the very thing you love! Attending college also gives you the chance to really decide how you want to represent yourself. The things you get involved in, the places you go, who you are friends with, etc., show your motivations, what you value and who you are as a person. So be whoever you want to be! Finally, but surely not entirely, college teaches you your true strength. Through high-stress exams, time-consuming projects, strenuous assignments, and whatever barriers you may face, your authentic capability is unleashed.
The world stresses going to college for the career and financial security that you may receive when in reality it is so much more beneficial than that. Living on your own rewards you with strengthening or even newly learning skills like perseverance, dedication, responsibility, and discipline. Unlocking new traits, passions and driving forces come from the things you experience and learn as a college student. Ultimately in college, you learn things you never knew about yourself while pursuing your dreams for the future. Attending college is a vital part of life where you experience a journey that results in newly acquired qualities as well as being set up for a life of self-attunement that will propel you to succeed.
