Freedom by Sara - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Leadership is defined as an action of leading a group of people or organization. Some may think that leadership is limited at academics, but in my opinion they are wrong. Leadership is shown everyday without people knowing. Whether leadership is shown with friends or on the job, it is a very important part of everyday life.

I am starting my first year of college this fall. Realizing that I will not have parents or guidance with me makes me exceedingly nervous. Throughout high school I had guidance from teachers, friends, school staff, and most importantly my parents. Next year I will not have any of them with me to help. That means I will have to be mature enough and smart enough to know how to lead.

In my opinion leadership is going to be significant in my social life when I go off to college, not just my academics. For example, in high school people always wanted to go out and do reckless things. I was always raised to not be pressured by my peers. So I would lead and attempt to suggest other activities to participate in. In college, peers will try to persuade me to be more "chill", or "hip", but I lead my own life and I say no. I may lead others to say no also.

Leadership is important in everyday life; school, hanging out with friends, and also careers. Of course leadership is necessary in jobs and academics; but also in my social life. Leadership can affect my life in a million ways and it is all based on one decision. I may lead others, but I know that I am the leader of my life today which will affect what happens to me tomorrow.
