You and I, not we. by Sara - October 2014 Scholarship Essay

I am an individual. I don't learn the way you do. My brain cannot process information the same way your's can. I have synesthesia - I hear colors. I quit using one piano teacher because her voice was an ugly color. When you tap your pencil on your desk, it sends color pulsating through my head. When you can't keep a steady rhythm, it is very irritating to me.

You and I, we get some of the highest grades in the class, but we can't move ahead any faster then the rest of the class. Wouldn't it have been nice if we had all been separated after the second week of school? We could have moved along and finished at our pace, and the people who need help could have had a more individualized class. Poor Alice, did you hear she dropped out? She had so much potential, but no-one to help her. We shouldn't all be expected to learn the same way.

I need the structure of the teacher requiring everyone to raise their hands, the sound of everyone trying to answer at once is very upsetting. But she should be fair when choosing who gets to answer. Stephen shouldn't get to answer all the questions because he is the teacher's cousin's nephew. We should be treated as equals.

You and I are very similar, but not the same. We need to be viewed as two separate people. Not just as students. You and I cannot say "We as middle class freshmen learn this way." because we don't. You learn one way and I learn another. Schools would be so much better if they understood this. In the perfect school, you and I would not be seen as part of a class, but as two people out of many who want to learn.
