The Purpose of an Education by Sandra - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

If our parents’ lives are the example and we are their legacy, how may we not continue from where they leave us? The values and knowledge we carry along with us is, in large part, the education we receive from growing up in our families, communities, and culture. We advance while reflecting on our values. We interact with the world around us using our minds first and whatever tools are available only serve to share, communicate and distribute those ideas, values
and purposes.

Our education helps the original human need to imagine, create, and to produce. It is the individual that must receive the necessary diverse education in order to be able to use the tools appropriately and, ideally, for the greatest good. It is important for me to understand the world in which I live in. My understanding comes from my education, experiences in and out of school. The brief understanding of the history of our human civilization brings awareness and humility concerning the world and our apparent need to work with others, whether inside or outside of our country’s physical borders. I will be the fifth generation to attend college. My parents uphold that a true education includes the study of philosophy, ethics and morals, and equally that an education is a life-long process. It’s purpose is to augment our understanding of ourselves, each other, and our world.
