A Big Little Classroom by Sandra - October 2014 Scholarship Essay

I know what you're thinking. How can a classroom be both big and small? Here's exactly what I would like to see for classrooms all around the world. If teachers were paid the money they deserved, we could have the staff to house students in classrooms with 20 students or less (this is the small part). I feel it is necessary for each and every student to get the help they need in an environment that is not overwhelming and full of hundreds of others who may or may not also need help. I have personally been in a class with over 1,000 students in it. It was very unnerving for one, and for two, I often did not get the help I really needed and struggled quite a bit.

The second and main part of this big little classroom setting is a big area of classroom that is fill not with desks for students to sleep at, but an area for students to move about. Physical exercise is essential to a great learning environment. Obesity is a huge problem in the United States as well, and this would help the physical aspect of being fit as well as the mental vitalness of physical movement in a learning environment. If we had classrooms like this across the United States, I truly believe that our education statistics--that is, the U.S. average student--would increase significantly and we would be getting the education that we deserve in the United States.
