Dropout Millionaires and PhD Beggars by Sanam - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

The millennial generation has been exposed to a very different idea of success compared to previous generations. At one point, it used to be the case that a high school diploma ensured a job and a comfortable lifestyle. However, these days, graduates with PhD’s and master’s degrees can barely hold a job. Every once in a while, a high school dropout entrepreneur will make the headlines and stand as the outlier in a society where a college education is practically expected. What separates these highly successful, high school dropout entrepreneurs from those intelligent, jobless PhD’s? One main difference sets these two equally capable types of people apart: strong leadership skills which include efficient communication and a responsible “go-getter” attitude.

Communication, all three types, is key. With social media and rising levels of online social interactions becoming increasingly prevalent, scientific studies have proven that human attention spans are continuously becoming shorter. A combination of strong physical, written, and verbal communication will enable college students to get the point across in a shorter time in a more confident demeanor. Clear communication is necessary in order to convince a team to help make a difference in the world. The public education system does a proficient job at educating the youth; however, the ability to articulate one’s ideas in a convincing, confident manner is a skill that is not possessed by everyone.

Additionally, a common attribute most leaders possess is a persistent “go-getter” attitude. Failure and frustration is a common theme in college and even in life overall. However, what separates the truly successful is the ability to learn from failure and bounce back. Steve Jobs, the creator of Apple, was fired from his own company. He underwent countless failures, but his persistence to achieve his dream allowed him to become a success. Like Steve Jobs, it is important that college students also never take “no” for an answer and be willing to take advantage of any opportunity they may receive.

College is an opportunity that prepares students to become the forward-thinkers of tomorrow. All in all, leadership skills like strong communication skills and a persistent attitude are necessary to ensure success in college.
