High School Survival Guide by Samuel - November 2014 Scholarship Essay
The alarm chimes you awake as you wearily reach over to silence the beast of it’s dreadful sound. Oh how you wish to crawl back in bed and rest your eyes for just a moment longer. The summer of freedom and joy has finally come to an end. The day you have been dreading for months; your first day of freshman year. You fear whether or not people will like you, if you’ll fit in, if you won’t be able to handle the workload of homework. Have no fear, if you follow my advice, you’ll be ruling the school in no time.
Rule #1 to surviving high school, Relax. You have no idea how much easier high school if you simply take a deep breath and understand that it is not a life or death situation. Worrying about friends and school work can often do a number on a person’s mental state. With this in mind, my advice to you would be to just go with the flow. Over time you will naturally get the hang of balancing everything on your plate. I would suggest planning times where you can get away from everything around you, close your eyes, and just think. The stress will melt away in no time.
The most crucial advice I can give to anyone who is taking part in any class or any educational opportunity would be to Get Organized. Organization is very important in success in high school. I myself can think of multiple times where lack of organization has led to the lowering of my grades. If you keep organized you’ll never have to worry about where you left those Science notes or what possibly happened to that heavily weighted English paper. Take advice from someone who has much experience in the downsides to being unorganized, it makes getting good grades much more difficult.
The final words of wisdom is a bit cliche. I’m sure you’ve heard this many times from your parents or adults, but the last piece of advice I can give to you would be to Just Be Yourself. Don’t push to be something you are not. You don’t need to have friends who only like you for acting a certain way or wearing the nicest clothes. You were brought to this world with your own unique personality. That sets you apart from every other person you will ever come across, so be proud of who you are and the true friends will come in good time.
Remember, high school does not have to be hard. It is all what you make of it. So, keep your head up, a smile on your face and follow the “Game Plan”. If you do this, everything will be just fine.
