Sisters are Role-models by samantha - September 2013 Scholarship Essay
Who is your most inspirational academic role-model and why
My most inspirational academic role model is my sister, Jeanette. We grew up in a broken home, we have different fathers and our mother was a single parent. Our mother tried her very best, but working long hours left my sisters to care for me. My oldest sister Jeanette is fifteen years older than me and has patiently helped me through curiosities growing up. From cleaning up my messes while I was “cooking” when I was five years old, to helping me through my first semester in college, she’s always lent wisdom and footsteps to walk in.
Both my mother and father never finished college, but my sister Jeanette ended up going on to getting a B.A. in Criminal Justice and later an M.B.A. She always chose her battles wisely, and chose to not fight for respect on the streets, but to be at the top of her class. She had an unstable family, as did I, and her father was an alcoholic who never bothered to call her since she was two, but she kept believing in herself. Three years ago academia and life felt overwhelming. I didn’t want to do any of it and toyed with the idea of being an isolationist or just moving to another country. She invited me to stay with her for a month in Orlando. I accepted, having not seen her in over a year. It was then when I saw her her love for academia and people. She encouraged me that I could also keep going and finish my academic life strong. With help of government funding, loans, and scholarships I could make it happen. After much encouragement and esteem building, I went back to school and now I am in my last semester of college. I see my sister as smart, intelligent, loving, and brave. She reminds me that we have more in common then I realize.
