Keeping Up With Education by Samantha - July 2014 Scholarship Essay

I had to grow up fast. My mother left my family in 2004 and I had to be a mother to my two little brothers while my dad was working two jobs. I was always late to school because I had to walk my brothers to school. By sixth grade I wanted to get out of school because it was hard. There was no help around us.

I walked in class one day, late as usual, and my reading teacher was there standing at my desk with my Daily Homework Folder. She asked why didn't I finish my homework and why was I late for class. My answer was, " I have to take care of my brothers and when my dad comes home we cook dinner and I start cleaning up after my brothers with my dad and I would get ready for the next day. I didn't have time to my homework." She told me to stay for lunch.

She sat me down and talked to me. I told her the truth about my mother. I was crying my eyes out. She then told me about her mother leaving and how she and I were the alike. She told me that she dropped out of school when she was in tenth grade because she had to work. She did wrong and went back to school. That she didn't want the same for me just because of the situation. I was really smart and I had a future. For the rest of the school years till I moved I was after school for her class and every other class finishing my work and turning in my work on time. She gave me hope that one day I will be like her. Now that I graduated I look back on how much I had changed from that day to now. I kept up my grades, graduated top ten, and was doing the best for myself because she gave me hope; like she said, "No matter what happens in life, I will always have an education."

I wish I could of told her what I have done since I left. But she passed away due toold age
