Sparking a Fire in Chemistry by Samantha - July 2014 Scholarship Essay

In the words of Nelson Mandela, education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. Teenagers in today's world have plenty of activities they could be participating in, such as sports, clubs, socializing, using social media, and sleeping. Education is one of the most important activities worth completing, as it helps create successful people.

I have always enjoyed going to school and learning new things. My favorite part about school is the challenge that teachers can bring upon students. For me, science was an extremely fascinating subject that I didn't particularly excel at. My second period of my first semester of junior year was Honors Chemistry. I wasn't aware on the first day that I would have a brilliant teacher who taught me lessons not only on chemistry, but on education too.

Every day I was met with challenging work in chemistry, whether it be through labs, tests, book work, or demonstrations. My class looked forward to participating in the wacky labs and demonstrations that my intelligent teacher thought of the night before. The workload I faced in chemistry was the biggest I'd ever had in my high school career. I spent countless hours outside of the classroom studying so I could keep my high grade.

I ended chemistry with a 95, which is an accomplishment that I will forever be proud of. My chemistry teacher sparked my fire for learning so much, that I have decided to push myself even more my senior year. As a result, I have become a part of a high school scholars academy that takes place at a local university. I can't thank my chemistry teacher enough for being that extra push I needed to begin utilizing my educational opportunities.
