Higher Education by Samantha - July 2017 Scholarship Essay
I come to you with a great concern that has burdened our society for way too long. That is the debt in today's economy that is out of control and has no time frame to be mended any time soon. The specific debt I am addressing is that caused by raging college tuition.
Today it is difficult for a student to receive a college education without creating a tremendous amount of debt. In many cases, the debt acquired through tuition and other school associated expenses will linger for the rest of a student's life. These school expenses in conjunction with other life expenses like that of vehicles, housing, marriage, and children, set a person up for a life full of frustration, anxiety, and depression.
The large majority of American citizens in the middle class are very stressed whenever a member of the family is about to enter or has entered college, even more so if the parents of the household have student loans or college debt of their own. Middle class citizens do not receive very much financial aid because it is assumed that students of these families do not need assistance to pay for a post-secondary education. Many of these families have several children who will soon attend college, leading to further expenses and worry. Not only do the parents of these households suffer, the young adults working toward their college career endure the pain as well. A very hard-working student could receive very little support to pay for inflated college tuition fees because of the decent amount of money their parents make.
Most young adults do not have the ability to vote due to not being of age. The majority of the voting base are the older generations, who vote for health care and other polices which are given much attention. The issues of the current generation needs to be addressed as well. People start college thinking eighty to a hundred thousand dollar loans are normal to have. The schools and loan companies give these loans out willingly, because they are federally insured and they are certain that they will be given back their money. Once students are in debt, many cannot keep up with their payments and run the risk of the government garnishing their wages.
It is because of this that I have come to talk to you in order to initiate a plan of action for a more reasonable projected and standardized college expense. In closing, we cannot allow these colleges and universities to set their own price. We need to keep in mind that students at the age of seventeen or eighteen years old are not life knowledgeable enough to make financial decisions that will impact them for their rest of their lives. Thank you for your time and attention. I hope we can start a movement in order to assist the students of tomorrow.
