Students Success Through Leadership by Sabrina - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

When reading this question, I stopped to think what constitutes as a leadership skill. Would it be empowering people? Would it be listening to people’s ideas and deciding what is best for the team? Or would it be inspiring people and setting an example through honesty and competence? A leader should encompass all of these skills and more, but not every successful person develops every one of these traits. I believe some leadership skills are necessary for college success, but not all leadership skills.

In college, students are faced with daily challenges and forced into leadership rolls through associations. Students get involved in clubs, sports teams, and organizations on campus because they have passion and perseverance. Without these traits, students would not even be able to put their leadership skills to good use. However, once in a club, in order to gain more responsibility, students must possess some leadership skills. If a student wishes to run an organization and be responsible for leading a group of people, they must have some sort of leadership skills and knowledge.

I believe college success can be defined in several ways, and being an important part of an organization is a big way to define college success. I believe student involvement on campus is almost as important, if not as important, as succeeding in classes because it gives students the opportunity to experience different activities and take their mind off of schoolwork. With this mindset, it is crucial for students to have some knowledge and experience in knowing how to lead a group to a common goal. Possessing honesty, wisdom, shared vision, communication skills, and encouragement can truly help college students gain success, but only when coupled with passion, perseverance, and being a friendly person, which others wish to interact.
