Innocence to Reality by Roshi - June 2017 Scholarship Essay
The paint brush stroked the fresh piece of printer paper. I sat at the kitchen table for hours on end perfecting an unidentifiable work of art to anyone over the age of six. Drawing, painting, and coloring consumed my childhood and I dreamed of pursuing art as a career when I viewed the world through ignorant eyes. As I attended school, I began to discover the world of architecture and yet again I was fooled that I could choose any career solely based on my interest. As my knowledge of society evolved, I began to learn the shocking truth behind one’s career. I realized that I must take several factors into account when deciding what I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing.
I still believe a salary should not be the only rationale behind one’s selection; however, I have witnessed struggling families barely making it by due to limited incomes. It is true when they say “Money cannot buy happiness,” yet it does buy the necessities to survive. A decent salary is required in the growing world today and I soon became conscious of the fact that a career in art would not sustain the life I have envisioned.
As I reached the teenage years, I saw the need to discover other fields that could still be fulfilling. Through art, I wanted to bring people joy; I was determined to unearth another profession with the same goal. I stumbled upon the world of medicine when I visited my dad at work one summer day. I uncovered a new passion that I was ready to dig deeper into. As a current high school senior, my goal is to be able to travel to developing countries and aid populations in need; if I can change at least one life, then it will have been worth it.
