Asserting my Independence by Rosanne - November 2013 Scholarship Essay
I am unlike those who accompany me. I feel far distinguished among the people and places I grew up with. The thought of living in a new environment enticed and adorned my thoughts each day as I learned more.
When I was younger I used to imagine what it would be like to have your own home, pay bills, and yet manage to attend school to better yourself for the future career you’d have. I’d indulge on images seeing myself through the busy patient rooms of a large hospital and the thumping of my heart as I raced to each room guarding each patient’s needs, because I knew it was my responsibility and it had to be done.
When I was thirteen years old my days as a student were alike. The routine would be going to school at nine in the morning, coming home at five in the afternoon, doing homework, and sometimes tutoring others in any subject they’d need help in. My family would discourage me and tell me there is no point in helping others, and they were disrespectful on my behalf. I said to myself “When I am an adult I will prove to them that there is a point in helping others, because in assisting others we may learn from ourselves, and independence includes responsibility and learning from one’s self.
During my childhood years I endured a few struggles, but with the right mind and attitude I withstanded my problems. When I became a teenager I finally realized what independence meant and what it would symbolize. It is an opportunity, which should not be abused. Independence should be respected as a privilege would be. Attending college would enable me to distinguish myself as an individual and would be well- suited for motivated students who are compelled to their successes.
The arising emotional alternation continued into the process of college application time. With an active spirit and ambition to learn I believe I’d be a great asset to any college community.
