The Event that Changed my life by Romeo - February 2017 Scholarship Essay
In life many people experience different situations, whether it is failing at something they are very passionate about and learning from that failing experience and trying again; or just giving up on the situation. In my life I am very passionate about football. To me football is a way to success and a way to provide for my family. I have had many experiences with football that did not end very well. A situation I failed at and I learned something important from that situation was when I lost a football tournament when I was in the 8th grade
When I was in the 8th grade, my youth football team the Dynasty Dragons won the opportunity to travel to Florida to play in the AYF championship. During that time I was the type of person who thought I could just receive everything I wanted without working for it. I would never work hard in practice. The outcome of me being very lazy and thinking great things would happen to me was a 1-3 record in Florida; which was a big failure to me and my teams because we did not think we would travel 21 hours to only win 1 game. I knew that I was not the main reason we lost that tournament, but I also knew that I could have played a big part in helping us competing at a higher level, if I was training and listening to my coaches. After me realizing that if I wanted to fulfill my dream of making it to the National Football League I would have to work harder. I went into high school with the mindset, that I would never be out worked by anyone else, and let my team down, and trying to be the best Student-Athlete I can be. This mindset was the best thing that could happen to me. I ended up become a starter my freshman year for my high school varsity team.
But in my mind I knew that I did not accomplish anything yet, my main goal was getting accepted to a Division-1 college and playing for their football team. If I wanted to accomplish this goal I would have to work way harder than ever before. I would just look at a quote I seen online which said "There are 6.9 million high school athletes, how will you stand out" - “There are 254,000 seniors who play high school football. There are only 5,042 athletic scholarships awarded at the D1 level. Your odds are 1-50 that you get a scholarship.” After this quote I thought to myself of how I am very different from the 6.9 million kids, and the 5,042 that receive a scholarship every year. The situation of me and my team failing very badly, and how I could end up not being one of those fifty kids that receive a chance at a scholarship just fueled my fire; I knew those 1-50 student-athletes in the quote were nothing like me. I have something they didn’t I have a very good work ethic
Many people have a choice in their life after they fail at a very big situation whether they should continue and try again, or give up and move on. My failure was the outcome of me not working hard enough and thinking I was already talented and did not need to improve myself. This failure fueled me to change my ways, and it changed my mindset about everything. I started to study harder in school. Now I am on my way to receive a division 1 scholarship because I was able to learn from my failures and take a different path in my life. In summation, the outcome of me failing and feeling I was the reason my team lost caused me to become a very different person and become the hard working person I am today.
