Leadership Skills in College by Rivka - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Leadership skills are necessary to succeed in college. A student must be able to lead, whether there is a group or team project or lead by helping out when friends are struggling. College provides numerous opportunities to grow as a leader, through extracurricular activities such as sports, Student Council, and various other associations. Without a leader to help steer a process forward, accomplishing goals and group tasks would be haphazard and incomplete.

Success in higher education is about more than showing up and doing the minimum, but rather putting full effort into every aspect of school. Professors often assign group projects. A leader knows not need to control the whole project, but he/she is someone who will take action and develop strategies so the group works well as a team. A leader delegates when needed as well as demands equal responsibilities for him/herself.

It is normal for a student to have difficulties with their schoolwork at times. A leader can recognize those difficult times and find ways to work through problems in the most productive way. He/she will accept the challenge and when needed, knows to ask others for help as well. In addition, a leader can look around the classroom and offer help to other students in times of need in a supportive and thoughtful manner.

Whether there is a sports team that needs a team captain or a Student Council that needs a President, a leader is someone who rises to the occasion and works to do good things on behalf of the entire student body. A student leader always represents their university in a positive and responsible light.
