Education is a powerful tool. by Rhys - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

Many educated men and women have gone on to create, discover and mesmerize. Education has lead to the discovery of the double-helix structure of DNA, it has lead to create the almost panacea drug penicillin, and even to the show awesome displays of displays of beauty in the forms of deep space photography or thrilling manipulation of light waves/particles. Education has also lead to the discovery nuclear fusion to be the basis for atoms bombs, it has been used to create Agent Orange in biochemical warfare, and as a result shocked with world with the use of education for destruction. This is the superficial nature of education, science, math, language and history. Yes society would call these people educated, but solely calculated. By no means is this to discredit those educated like said, however many are considered educated, but by no means are on the same level, let alone spectrum, of thought as Aristotle, or Watson and Crick and Franklin, or Alexander Fleming. The purpose of education is simply to educate; educate individuals about science and math, but also provide morality, decency and humanism to them.

Education serves as a tool to better society as a whole. Education helps to explain to us human nature. It allows us not only to know what we do as human beings, but why we do it, our motivations, fears, and emotions. Education has taught us that nearly nothing is impossible. Many ideas had been presumed as impossible: geocentrism, flight, and space travel, but are now considered feats of the past. Unfortunately the masses of the world are not educated up to standard. Education provides intelligence in a logical methodical manner. When people start to diverge from logic certain misconceptions occur. Feelings of superiority arise from generalizations and inequalities. Education not only allows individuals to be higher functioning to see through petty differences, but it also provides a level of intellectual equality. While the masses are uneducated, such problems remain. Self dependence also remains an issue which would be simply remedied by education. People rely on others to do things not because they are in a position of power, which is often awarded from being educated, but because they can only function on the level of completing assembly line tasks. Henry Ford, the father of the assembly line itself, said “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.” An educated man, not only in the respect of the science and math, but innovation and provided a timeless invention. Lastly, education would allow people to better the world they live in. Advances in healthcare, economic growth, and stability are all made possible with the fuel of education. In the ideal world where everyone is up to par and the standards of education, there would be no chaos, dependency, or faltering morality.

Getting an education is a tool to educate, to provide people with an opportunity to better themselves. “Freedom is indivisible, and when one man is enslaved, all are not free.” – John F. Kennedy. Steps are made to educate, and every increase in education is a step closer to a perfect world, however until the day where everyone is well enough educated, evils may still exist.
