Ordinary to Varsity by Rhea - February 2017 Scholarship Essay

I remember my self-esteem plummeting to the ground as my tennis coach in 8th grade told me I had no potential in the sport, “...perhaps you should try something else.” I’m not going to lie, I had accepted my career in tennis had come to an end. My sister, who wasn’t even passionate about the sport, would get nothing but compliments on her form. Tired of the degradation, I became motivated to not only practice more, but to show my coach I had potential.

I spent the entire summer practicing tennis, whether it was with my sister or with my friends. I practiced without a coach; I was determined to do it on my own. Freshman year of high school began and I decided to try out for the tennis team. I practiced each and every day until tryouts. I never lost hope. I even completed the arduous task of perfecting my ball slice; a tactic that takes years to master. To my surprise, I not only made the tennis team, I made Varsity!

Tennis was just an example of the type of person I am. I fight for what I want. I am determined and motivated to pursue my passion even if those around me feel I should “try something else.” This experience taught me that when I put my mind to something, I can accomplish anything, and this very mindset will guide me through my endeavors in college and medical school as I strive to become a doctor.
