New Year, New Student by Renz Joseph - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

It is a new year! A new year has come with new memories, blessings, experiences, and adventures. New year, new me. I say it every single year, but this year is going to be different.

Many people have different perceptions and definitions of the word “student.” Many people believe a student is someone who focuses on schoolwork; one who excels on his or her tests, homework, and projects. After all, the words “studious” and “student” have the same root.

But to me, a student is not defined only by his or her academics. A good student is an obedient child to his or her mother and father. A good student shows good sportsmanship on and off the field, track, or court. A good student is one who is there to help a friend in need. A good student takes on the challenges and hardships of a leader. For my New Year's resolution, I am determined to finish my senior year being the best student and leader I can be.

Growing up, born and raised a Christian, I have always wondered what God’s plan was for me. This past year, he really made visible what he wants me to do with my life. No matter the vocation I am called to or the occupation I plan to work in, God has called me, is calling me, and will call me to be a leader. To be a better student, I must be a leader.

Being a leader in student government is harder than it seems, especially with so much diversity and opinions at my school. Despite all of that, I have always told myself that I will always be there for the students. Whether it be tutoring the international students in English, giving the underclassmen rides to school or home, or simply talking to my friends about a personal problem, I try to be there for them as much as I can. Everyone needs a friend in high school, and I want to be that friend for those who may feel like they do not deserve one.

It is not easy to be a leader. I am carrying responsibilities on my shoulder. There are days when I feel so fed up and exhausted that I want to stop leading. But then there are the good days. Those days reassure me that a leader does not give up when things are going tough. Good things come to those who work are passionate, hard-working, and motivated. A good student stands up after falling to the ground, no matter how easy it is to stay still.

My New Year’s resolution is to be a better leader. In order to be a better student, I need to be a leader. Leaders are everywhere, not just in the classroom. A good leader pushes a teammate to work harder. A good leader consoles those desperate for someone to be there for them. A good leader takes the initiative to make the world a better place.

This is the year I stop following in the dark and start leading in the light.
