Are leadership skills necessary for college success? by Reginald - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Having great leadership skills can be vital in today’s working class. I think this is a skill that is learned, experienced, and expanded on in college. I don’t think that leadership skills are necessary for a successful college career. Great leadership can impact you college success, but in my opinion there are several other important factors that contribute to college success.

We all have the potential to be great leaders. But, in order to fulfill this potential, we must work at it. Experience is a great way to gain these leadership skills, but there are limited opportunities during our college career. So we must use this time to learn how to be a great leaders. We must watch our mentors and other people we look up to and absorb as much knowledge as we can. These individuals, as well as many professors, are great leaders. So when we have the opportunity to absorb and learn we should take full advantage of it. We must define what leadership skills are and learn to implement them in our lives. College has set a tremendous stage to hone in on these leadership skills and being a leader is not as important as it would be after graduation. That is why I believe leadership skills are not necessary for success in school.

Being a natural born leader would have some advantages during a college career but, it should not be the greatest factor when determining success. Being a college student is not easy. There are several other important skills needed that should contribute greatly to a student’s success. For example, a good student should study regularly. So, have having excellent study skills would directly correlate with grades and gpa. A good student must also manage time well, budget money, and also deal with all types of stress. A college student would be more incline to working on developing one of these skills.

We all strive towards success. Even more so in college. Our college success will affect the rest of our lives. This is not taken lightly and college students, like myself, work hard to graduate and have a successful journey after college. Leadership skills are invaluable to have throughout our entire lives. There are also a ton of skills that are invaluable to have on the college level alone. I truly believe that college should be a perfect place to learn, hone and develop these leadership skills, not to exemplify them. I think this is what makes good, successful leaders in our world today.
