Taking Control of Your Life by Rebecca - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

The purpose of an education is to take control of your life and learn the necessary skills to succeed. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look it, most jobs take some type of training in order for people work in their desired career field. This allows people to specialize in their preferred field and by default only qualified workers are entering the work force prepared for the type of job they trained for. An education may require college or it may require a trade or tech school, but either way an education is necessary to further the life you want to live. A job isn’t everything in life but loving what you do is extremely important.

An education is a gateway to success, although academics may be the first thing to come to mind, it may take many other different forms. For me, the idea of an education has changed over time. The education I earned during my undergraduate college experience was much more encompassing than the two degrees I earned. I learned how to live on my own, how to make my own decisions, how to keep finances, how to be my own person, and this personal growth was just as important as the two degrees. I would not be where I am without both the degrees and the personal growth, and I was only able to get to this point in my life with an education. It is also because of these experiences, and time I spent interning after graduation (another type of education), that I realized what I want to do with my life. I have worked at various arts organizations and found that I gravitate toward the environment at educational institutions and museums. In order to pursue the museum career path further, a master’s degree is required. The education that I will gain in my graduate program this coming year will allow me to take control of my life and give me the necessary skills to succeed.
