The Force by Raxel - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
Every vital character in any important movie has had one important characteristic: leadership. Only these characters are the ones who are able to make a difference and go on a captivating adventure to prove such an characteristic. College is the movie that every high schooler constantly replays in their head, with images of friends and success. In none of these daydreams would any student see themselves as someone who will just blend in with the crowd and not work to be the prominent student which the university accepted. Much like Luke with “the force,” leadership is the underlying and necessary trait to college success.
Leadership is the root of innovation- any act or project cannot fully even be thought of without the capability and self-assured confidence to go through with it. To be a leader to be someone who can motivate themselves to do more than just the average person, and to break barriers that have yet to be even seen. While in college, someone with leadership would go out of their way to start new groups, fix problems, and be there for others. These are things that people with a lack of leadership would never initiate. To be a leader is to be free of such convictions of the mind, and to be able to truly reach the full potential in thought, body, and environment given.
Any leader will have the motivational and people skills to be trustful and convincing in all that they may do. Martin Luther King, Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln- all prime examples of what leadership skills and passion can convince others of. To have leadership one has to understand that success in such a given talent can only be placed in the hands of those who have the right intentions. Of course, leadership is an important factor, but so many other characteristics needs to go hand in hand with leadership to promote success. King Leopold II, Hitler, Joseph Stalin- all key figures who had the leadership, but lacked the other qualities to maintain in harmonious rule. While “the force” may have been strong in these leaders, the dictated their own success. If the right leadership and the right set of mind come together, success is bound to happen to the dedicated college student.
Leadership is more than just a simple trait, it is the key to sustainment. While followers may depend on the ability of the others to help them throughout life, those with leadership know and do help themselves. This self-serving independence can truly come in handy once at college, where most students are on their own for the first time. Self-reliance in leadership can be motivational in getting work done, balancing a social life and school, while taking advantage of the college experience that many do not the chance to experience. Maybe leadership is too generalized of a term to say that it will be the key component to success, but it is the perfect place to start. College being a new setting, with new people, and new experiences can all make someone feel small. To have the leadership, to rise above, and not be threatened by the unknown situation can easily assure an easier path in college. This withstanding trait is the foundation for success in college, what one does with it is what will show in the end of the movie.
