How to be an Awesome High School Freshman by Ramon - November 2014 Scholarship Essay

Making it to high school is a pretty important academic milestone. I’m sure you’re quite excited about making it this far, and you probably have a ton of questions that are going through your mind. The good news is that 1) you’re not alone in this, and 2) you have a good chance of having a great time since you’ve made it this far. You’ve probably already heard a ton of advice from your parents and teachers on how to make new friends and have the best high school career possible. I went to high school and graduated with all the cool seniors, so I’m going to let you in on a little success tip that really helped me.

Maybe you’ve heard people talking about habits — things someone does regularly. Practicing good habits is a major key to success in high school. Here’s the success tip: get in the habit of working on some of your homework every day. In other words, don’t procrastinate. Habits are usually pretty easy to start and difficult to break. You want to start good habits like choosing not to procrastinate. By getting your assignments done and not waiting until the last possible moment to start them, you are basically boosting yourself from a high school freshman to an awesome high school freshman.

Think about it this way: if you go ahead and just get that homework done, you’ll be able to maximize your free time. And yes, that means time to make new friends, go to proms, and participate in those extra group activities you’ve always wanted to try. So while everyone else is stuck rushing to finish up that homework that’s due tomorrow, you get to do the fun stuff — maybe even tweak your social campaign. However, it only works if you start practicing those good habits right away! Don’t procrastinate. Make the most of the time you have; it will pay off. That’s the big key to having a successful first year in high school and being an awesome freshman.
