Why education is important by Rachel - March 2017 Scholarship Essay

Education is a topic that I am passionate about. I would give a speech to a school-wide audience about the importance of education. Many students in school do not appreciate the gift of free education. In addition to the basic curriculum, students receive practical experience about how to become a well-rounded person in society and gain skills they need in the real world. Also, schools provide the opportunity for students to grow within certain areas of artistic talent. For example, schools educate students how to play a musical instrument or talk in front of an audience in theatre. In school, students are able to figure out what interests them for a future career. Students take these opportunities for granted because school has been a part of their life since they were in preschool. Some students just attend school just because it is the law and not because they desire to finish their education. It is now just a routine. School is hard; these challenges are not the teacher’s fault, but the lessons that are taught will help students grow in their knowledge for the real world.
On the other hand, in third world countries this is not always the case. School is not always free and not everyone is allowed the gift of education. Some children risk everything just to have the opportunity to learn and better their lives. While in America, students need to stop wishing away their time in school and enjoy their precious time of learning before they will be thrown into their adult life. This topic is personal to me because I went to Honduras on a missions trip to help build a school two summers ago. The children in this community did not have access to a public school because they did not have birth certificates. The school we helped built will give these children and even adults the opportunity to finish their education through 3rd grade. Education grants people a better chance of getting a job in the future. After I finish my education at the high school and college level, I will never take for granted the lessons I learned in school that will help through life. This is why I would want to make a speech about Education to a school-wide audience. I want to help people realize the great power of education.
