Leadership Skills for College Success by Quintin - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Are leadership skills necessary for a college success? Some people of course will say no, while others like me will say yes.

I honestly believe that leadership skills are necessary for a college success. I am not talking about leadership as in one person leading a group of other people. No, the leader needs to be you, and you need to lead yourself through college success.

Everyone can agree that when we fall asleep after a long day it is oh so relaxing. Our eyes fall heavy and the dreams surround us instantly. Hours later, or what seems like 10 minutes later, we wake up to the buzzing of our alarm clocks. In that split second decision we either decide to snooze it and fall back asleep, or we wake up and get ready. I am going to say a vast majority of us all are the ones who snooze it. Almost 90 percent of the time we will do this.

In a way there is some leadership in that decision making with waking up. Was it truly the correct decision a leader would make? What if we changed that setting to a college dorm room? Instead of a small split second decision we have to think about classes. One day missed, okay not a problem, just get the work tomorrow. Then it starts to become a habit of constantly sleeping in. Which would result in classes being failed. Even one class failed in college is not a good thing. We need to be leaders and lead ourselves into college. Then into the real world. If we do not lead ourselves, who will? Maybe a friend will come by, but they can not do that forever. The real leader is inside all of us and we need to use our leadership skills for ourselves and possibly to others. This is exactly why I believe that leadership skills are necessary for college success. We need to be our own leaders to lead us into each class everyday and finish the work. This will of course lead us into graduation day where our future is right in front of us all.
