College Makes a Leader Out of All of Us by Philip - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

To be a leader one must have charisma, character, and an uncanny ability to speak out loud when necessary. Strangely enough, that person cannot be biased in any way towards any subject, no matter how they feel towards it. He/she naturally has the wit to make decisions in which others would not or cannot. A leader will argue against what he/she feels to be wrong, always. To be shy is not even a thought, not matter what audience stands before him/her. For a leader, to be nervous or scared is not an option. To be a leader is to be followed, and to be followed is to be loved.

However, to answer the question on whether being a leader is necessary for college success, my answer is yes. Why? The fact that people just attend college, let alone be successful at it is to lead. That person may not be leading the masses into greatness or changing the world, but he/she is at least leading his/herself to greatness or to change their own world. Just think what leadership skills it takes to submit applications to colleges and universities across the world, not knowing what the outcome will be, and preparing to leave home and family when the opportunity arises to do so. To be accepted into a college or university and not fully understanding what they may get themselves into; the hundreds of different majors to choose from, and thousands of different classes upon which one must decide on a few to attend. Then, there are also social, recreational, and academic clubs that are all willing to accept your membership so that one may be able to do more than just the average college student. And of course, there is always the anxiety of reaching out to strangers in order to make friends and networks for the future because not to do so would be crippling for one's career post college. Also, there is the necessity to work in order to support oneself with food, school supplies, and clothing when family does not. Plus, at some point in their college career, one must intern in some business or company in the field of their degree to obtain experience so that they can more easily find an occupation when they graduate. Finally, the most important of all, that student must maintain decent grades in order to continue all of this. Imagine the insurmountable amount of stress that may come, the dedication required! To be a college student and succeed at it is no easy feat, but a feat accomplished by leaders.

So again, why is it necessary to be a leader in order to succeed in college? Because to be in college is to be a leader and to succeed in college is to continue to be one. College makes leaders out of all of us.
