Leadership Skills Not Needed by Paul - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
Leadership Skills Not Needed
The question being asked is "Are leadership skills necessary for college success? Why or why not?" Personally, I believe that leadership skills are not needed for college success. I myself didn't have these skills during my time spent in college.
First of all, I think that leadership skills are best for those that were born with them. I feel that leaders have people skills, good communication skills, and that are able to be assertive. Not everybody has the same personality, meaning they will not have these skills. Even without leadership skills, people still go to college and succeed with their education goals.
One important leadership skill is communication. I was horrible at speaking to a new person let alone communicating to a large group. I wanted to stay in my own little bubble and just associate with my few close friends. To get my college work done, I didn't need to talk to my classmates or teachers. I just received my class syllabus and did my assignments as scheduled. I felt that I learned just as much as the people who were better with communication skills. Actually I think I did quite well with my education. I currently have my Bachelor's of Science in Nursing. I had a 4.0 GPA. I feel that makes me successful.
Another quality of a leader is to be assertive. Like stated earlier, I was a shy person. I didn't like to rock the boat or step on anybody's toes. If there was a problem, I would let the more "assertive" people bring up the situation. Like I said, I did well with my education and wasn't the one to speak up and demand change or complain about some issue. I just let things be and did my work.
One last skill that I will discuss that leaders have is problem solving skills. Yes, everybody needs to have some sort of problem solving skills to be able to get their work done for their classes. This skill though ties in with the skill of communication and assertiveness. If you have the answer to a problem, you need to have the assertiveness to get to one to help solve this problem and the ability to communicate to those to tell them the answer to that problem. This is not needed for your success with your college education.
So in conclusion, I feel that you do not need leadership skills to be successful in your college career. You can just focus on your work, not make waves, and get through the education to reach your goal.
