Education: A Door Opening to Endless Possibilities by Olivia - April 2015 Scholarship Essay
One could argue many points as to why having an education is an integral piece of the puzzle we call life. In my humble opinion, I believe that the purpose of having an education is to increase a person’s potential in every aspect of their lives in order to help them succeed in every way possible.
We all know that without an education, the options are limited for what a person can do with their life, with most steady income careers requiring a high school or college degree. Careers shape lives. They can determine what social class a person resides in along with many other aspects of living. An education can provide a path for a successful future, and along with learning the core curriculum, other unique and very important branches are extended towards students at which they can eagerly grasp for an even more extensive range of knowledge.
I would like to share an experience of how one class affected a few more classes, which would affect my life forever. I have taken piano lessons since the young age of 4. Throughout elementary and middle school, my education regarding music could not flourish due to lack of classes. I truly believe I could be further in my career as a musician if I had been more exposed as I was growing and learning to experience life. As I approached high school, I was determined to get the most out of an education as I could, and I auditioned and was accepted to Las Vegas Academy of the Performing Arts as a piano major. Making this step, taking this class, changed my outlook on the importance of an education forever. Knowledge flowed into me from all angles from just taking one piano class for an hour and a half each day. I discovered that as I opened one door in my journey through education, many more opened up to me and I loved every door I walked through. Learning how to listen and cooperate with multiple musicians in a large setting taught me patience, reasoning, and understanding. As I progressed as a musician and connected emotionally with my pieces, a world of art and literature was opened up and before I knew it, I was immersed in the culture of art and was creating it on my own. Books, poems, and film all introduced themselves to me in a completely new light, as if I was just discovering them for the first time. Piano gave me so much besides the capability to understand, perform, and create music. Piano brought me to life. Having that education shaped me into a person I am proud to be.
Education is extremely important, not only for getting through the basis of life, but to introduce you to the many layers of living that life has to offer. With each thing a person learns, a hundred more opportunities wait around the corner. I am thankful for each corner I have rounded, and cannot wait to discover the endless possibilities that having an education can bring to my life.
