Success Within and Beyond College by Olivia - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Being a leader does not require a fancy title or recognition. Rather, a leader is someone that leads by example, sticks to their morals, and influences others through their actions - both verbal and nonverbal. Leadership skills ground a person to their integrity and allow them to make decisions for themselves. College is the place where a student’s morals are tested and lives are changed. Having the right leadership skills can take an individual far in their life. It is important and necessary to possess such skills to be able to be a successful student in college as well as a successful individual in life.

Leadership skills include: responsibility, confidence, commitment, dedication, and collaboration. These traits blend with the natural character of a human; everyone has the potential to exhibit qualities of a good leader, it just depends on how each characteristic is applied. College challenges the integrity of its students, but with assured leadership skills the obstacles of the unknown can be overtaken. Someone that is dedicated to their values, committed to their education, and responsible for their decisions is a person that exercises their leadership skills in a positive manner that guarantees a successful college career.

College is not bound by strictly educational purposes, but rather is a place that allows students to apply what they have learned in school to the outside world. Leadership skills propel a college student to a contributing position in their community. Community service is an outlet for exhibiting leadership that inspires and helps other people. Many times students rally around a common passion to support a favorite cause, which is when their leadership skills enhance their interpersonal relationships within a college setting. Developing these interpersonal relationships helps to strengthen student ties among their peers in a classroom setting, thus producing a more successful college experience.
