Dealing with Decisions and Demands by Olivia - September 2014 Scholarship Essay

In 2010, Majorie Elliot, age seventy-five, received her long sought after high school diploma. She had been pulled out of school at the age of fourteen in order to support her struggling family. It “broke her heart” to discontinue her education, but she knew “that one day” she “would find [her] way back” to school (Elliot). The chance to return, however, did not come as soon as Marjorie may have expected. With motivation, Marjorie ultimately completed her goal sixty one years after she resolved to start it. Throughout a lifetime of hardship, she had never forgotten her dream of finishing her education. While many people would have forsaken their dream after so many years, Marjorie's dedication paid off proving to many young people that it is possible to succeed if one exhibits self-motivation and perseverance. Marjorie's story can be an example and an inspiration to incoming college students as they prepare for a new and somewhat overwhelming stage in their lives. While success in college requires many important skills, self-motivation is the most important as students will be expected to make their own decisions and complete rigorous courses.

Motivation will be important in many aspects of college life, one of which is decision-making. For many students, college will be their first experience living on their own. For the first time, they will be completely in charge of making their own decisions. The motivations for doing well in high school will no longer exist. College students will no longer have their parents forcing them to go to class or do their homework. The college professors will treat students as adults. They will not care if a student does not show up to class or does not do their homework. Instead, professors will simply assign that student the low grade that they deserve. If college students are not self motivated to study, they will quickly fall behind. However, if high school students develop self-motivation, they will likely make the right decisions and succeed.

Self-motivation will not only help students to make wise decisions, but also aid them in the completion of rigorous courses. In college the work load will be much larger and more demanding than in high school. Therefore, students will have to utilize motivation in order to keep going. While the courses may be demanding, students will need to remind themselves that they are also beneficial. If students develop self-motivation and determination, the temptation to give up will not be as great. They will be motivated to study and persevere and will ultimately succeed.

In conclusion, while college will require students to make their own decisions and complete demanding courses, students with self-motivation will be able to persevere and succeed. With self-motivation comes many other important qualities such as responsibility and diligence. When students exhibit self-motivation, they will more easily succeed when dealing with important decisions and strenuous demands.
