The Animal Rescuers by Olivia - June 2017 Scholarship Essay

Six year old Olivia Smith would sit before a small TV box playing “Zoboomafoo” and “The Crocodile Hunter”. Whenever she heard these show playing, she would practically teleport in front of the screen. These shows displayed images of various exotic animals in their natural habitat. The characters would demonstrate their deep respect and passion for animals which quickly sparked my passion for veterinary medicine.

I have always known I wanted to be a veterinarian. Steve Irwin was my idol and he taught me to be cautious and respectful of animals. My mother encouraged me to pursue a job in medicine and feel that veterinary medicine suited me. I can work hands on with animals while also building relationships with people.

Over the past 13 years, my perception of veterinary medicine has changed. I thought a veterinarian was someone who could cure any animal. As a six year old, I though Steve Irwin was the best veterinarian in the world. However, he is not a veterinarian at all. Steve Irwin was a herpetologist and conservationist. Although I am a fan of reptiles, I would much rather prefer to work with dogs, cats and other small animals as well. My idea of my dream career has been narrowed to a small animal veterinarian. I enjoy working with animals people keep as pets. In terms of zoo animals, I am more comfortable on the other side of the glass or fence.

Also, my career goals were further narrowed after shadowing Joseph Demers, DVM, and Ruth Spinosa, DVM. I have an interest in integrative medicine. In homeopathy, I strongly agree with the idea that like cures like. I have been able to witness the effects of electroacupuncture. I am also sure I would like to specialize in surgery. My fascination for the physiology of animals has lead me to truly appreciate what animals do for our society. As a veterinary surgeon, I will be better able to assist my patients and lead them to the road of recovery.

Currently, I plan on becoming a small animal veterinarian. I look forward to specializing in integrative medicine and/or surgery. For now I am doing what I can to future my development as a future veterinarian. I look forward to seeing where my journey will lead me.
