Mt. Horr Village Summer Camp by Nykara - December 2019 Scholarship Essay

All of the activities I have participated in have assisted in enhancing my athletic and academic abilities. They have also given me one of a kind experiences that I will never forget. However, only one has impacted me in ways I never could have imagined: Mt. Horr Village Summer Camp. Mt. Horr Village Summer Camp is a non-profit camp that brings young children together from all over the community and for four consecutive years, I have volunteered there. This past summer, I was employed there as a Youth Administrator through a program called Summer Youth Works and before I became a Youth Volunteer, I was a camper myself. I have ventured through this program for ten years and have experienced just about everything they have to offer. Every summer, for forty hours a week, I have committed my time and energy toward the children of this camp. Not only do we assist in preparing them for the following school year with curriculum, but we also inspire them to embrace their other talents. I know how important this is to the campers simply because I was once a camper myself. This is what personally motivated me to become a youth volunteer: I understood what it felt like to be in their position and I wanted to be sure they had the same support I did as I ventured through this program. I mentored these kids, helped them make lifetime friends, and taught them valuable lessons that will encourage them and give them insight as they progress through life. There was a unique experience with each camper and it was those unique bonds that kept me going everyday during the summer. It is a wonderful feeling knowing that I greatly impacted the lives of younger children as others did for me because children are the future, and consequently, a major part of society. I hope that my volunteerism will give others the willingness to embed knowledge about what is to come and encourage youth to live up to their greatest potential.
