A time I learned something unexpected in a class or club by Noah - July 2021 Scholarship Essay

Hello my name is Noah Skeens. Over this past summer I was a part of a club where I was able to volunteer to serve high schoolers in a camp near Flagstaff, AZ, in a small town called Williams. It was an experience I was not particularly looking forward to considering there were multiple ways to serve the campers and I was placed into the section to wash dishes. Initially I had a horrible mindset towards this due to the fact that this club was for a month straight, and I knew almost no one there. It was not looking too well for me.

As the days of dishwashing increased, I realized it wasn’t all about working and washing dishes for the campers, but it was also about getting to know the people I was working with. As this realization became more clear to me, I started enjoying the moments there more and more.

By the end of my second week there, I was closer to a lot of other workers than my friends from home. It was amazing to experience this in the span of a month, as I made countless new friendships and many more memories. All in all, I learned that when entering a new environment, keep a clear mind and your heart open because you never know how it will change you.
