Changing years; changing gears by Nikolas - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

While an obvious New Year’s resolution would be something along the lines of studying harder, getting more motivated, etc., my resolution is to have more fun this semester. While at first glance it may seem rash or silly, but life is all about balance. I did great my first semester and I am very proud of myself. Given this, I feel as if I worked too hard for my grades, fearing that I would not have done as well academically if I had taken a more laid back approach to my studies. After reflecting on this, I realized that my only issue was the fact that I did not leave enough time in my schedule for fun; whether it be playing basketball with my fraternity brothers, going home for the weekend to see old friends, or to simply kick back and unwind while watching television.

Furthermore, I was more stressed than I had to be –mainly because it was my first semester of college – and freeing time up for leisure would have improved my emotional health. I even took the initiative to follow through with my resolution by scheduling my classes in an efficient way to where I can make the most of each day. I scheduled my classes to where I would get them done in the morning each morning, get homework/studying done during the afternoons, and relaxing during the evenings. With this plan of mine, I will do everything in my power to see it through and becoming an overall better student this year.
