It's a Little More Than Education by Nicole - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

“Yay, writing about education… just want I want to do a few weeks before graduating.” These were thoughts oozing through my head as I read this month’s writing prompt. Although education, at first, registers in the dull and boring area of my brain, as I started to think about it more I realized it is quite an invigorating topic. What is the purpose of education? Why do we take so much pride and put an abundant amount of time, effort, and money into our education? As I pondered these questions, ideas began to seep into my mind of what education really means to me. Possibility, opportunity, and hope are just a few words that rang through.

To me, education is more than sitting in a classroom with a teacher lecturing about new things. It is the chance to better myself, to make a difference in my life and the lives of others around me. Furthering my knowledge will not only benefit me but it will enhance my community as well. I believe that as an individual living in a society with various types of people in it, it is my duty to give and share all of the intelligence that I possess. Being a member of a community, I am aware that there is a connection to being a part of something bigger and needing to play an important role by contributing the gifts and talents we retain from our education. The purpose of education is not to build a resume and score the highest, most elite job at a company; rather it is to know that others are gaining from the efforts made through education.

Receiving an education and using that education for the betterment of society is a highly selfless act. Considering the innovative ideas brought out now through education will help shape and assist the future. Education of one person reaches so much further than one can even imagine. The purpose of education is not just to make a living but it is to live, prosper, and guide. Education shapes our world because what we learn and come across will be the future for generations to come.
